Oil Consumption

C-Lube: a new tool for on-line oil consumption measurement on running engines

On-line measurement of oil consumption is of particular interest in light of the new environmental regulations imposed on modern engines.

Lubricant consumption has a negative impact on the environment, but it also reduces the life-time of post-treatment systems by poisoning catalysts and clogging particle filters.

C-Lube is a new equipment for on-line measurement of oil consumption. Various configurations are available for passenger car engines, heavy duty engines, and for vehicles.

C-lube, a new methodology for monitoring oil consumption/oil emission on running engines

The new oil consumption measurement method is based on the use of new radiotracers compounds that are easily mixed to the engine oil.
These radiotracers are made representative of the distillation interval of the base oil or, when required, of specific fractions, light or heavy.

Compared to the tritium technique, the new method is simple (no complex chemistry needed to label the oil), safe, and results are analysed on-line. Oil consumption measurement is performed in the exhaust line where oil residues are detected continuously.  The new product also offers advantages with regard to the sulphur method.  In particular, the quantity of marker added to the oil (< 1ml) is such that lubricant properties remain unchanged.

The new method is extremely sensitive and non-intrusive.

It does not require the use of special fuel.

Its very high sensitivity makes it possible to monitor lubricant consumption during transient operating phases, and to quantify accurately very low consumption levels.
