Oil Consumption

C-Lube: the right tool for on-line oil consumption measurement on I.C. engines

On-line measurement of oil consumption is of particular interest in light of the new environmental regulations imposed on modern engines.

Lubricant consumption has a negative impact on the environment, but it also reduces the life-time of after-treatment systems by poisoning catalysts and clogging particle filters.

C-Lube allows on-line measurement of oil consumption during engine operation. Various hardware configurations are available for passenger car engines, heavy duty engines, and for vehicles.

C-lube, a new methodology for monitoring oil consumption/oil emission on running engines

The measurement method is based on the use of radiotracers compounds that are added to the engine oil.
These tracers are representative of oil distillation interval. It is also possible to label specific fractions of the base oil: light, medium or heavy.

The radiotracer method is simple, safe, and results are analysed on-line. A measurement probe (see picture) is installed in the exhaust line where oil residues are trapped and monitored.  The quantity of marker added to the oil (< 1ml) is such that lubricant properties remain unchanged.

The new method is extremely sensitive and non-intrusive.

It does not require the use of special fuel.

Its very high sensitivity makes it possible to monitor lubricant consumption during transient operating phases, and to quantify accurately very low consumption levels.
